Dathün

is a month meditation retreat, which is offered several places, for me it was in France, Dechen Chöling, I just found a lot of photos, and thought it would be nice to show…and inspire…

To meditate for a month, from 6am – 10pm most of the day in silence, some days in total silence…is creating more space in the inner space, its a kind of decluttering…cleaning up a lot of endless repeating thoughts…its some of the best weeks in my life, and I would love to make another dathun…

Dathun is a month-long group meditation retreat. Led by senior teachers and experienced meditation instructors, dathun is an opportunity to fully immerse oneself in mindfulness meditation. Group practice is more than a number of people practicing together, each on their own path. Rather, group discipline and mindfulness creates a shared atmosphere of wakefulness, although there is not much talking. This mutual support, inspiration and awareness is at the heart of the journey that all the participants at dathun take together.

The practice of dathun is centered on mindfulness meditation. Each day consists of a full schedule of mindfulness practice, alternating sitting and walking meditation in the meditation hall. Although it takes real effort to do the practice, the daily discipline is based on joy in settling our minds and making friends with ourselves, not endurance or hardship for hardship’s sake. Participants are individually mentored by experienced instructors, and the leaders of the program offer teachings regularly that help put each meditator’s personal experience in the context of the meditative journey as a whole. The teachings of meditation have been passed down by generations of meditators who traveled the same path since the time of the Buddha.

In dathun, the practice of mindfulness goes beyond sitting on a mediation cushion; every aspect of daily life is part of the mindfulness discipline of rediscovering the present moment and our own hearts and minds. In a world of speed and multi-tasking, the simplicity of the daily schedule and routine of dathun provides a welcome alternative. Bit by bit we become friends with the present moment, unadorned, in the simple activities of the day: waking, brushing out teeth, dressing, sitting, breathing, serving food, eating, cleaning up, listening to a talk, and walking home in the cold evening with a full moon casting blue shadows on the snow.

Especially important is how we eat. In our daily lives, meals are often rushed and distracted, or a form of relief and entertainment. In dathun, you explore group meals as an expression of the sacredness of our connection to the world, each other and the food you eat.

To support this journey, the dathun have borrowed a Japanese Zen practice called oryoki. Each person has his or her own set of bowls, chopsticks and napkins. During each meal the set is opened, food is served accompanied by chanting, and everyone eats on the meditation cushion. After eating, the bowls are washed and the sets assembled right on the spot. (For lots more on oryoki, see http://www.shambhala.org/oryoki.php). For many people (once the ritual is familiar!), oryoki is a transformative practice, one that offers a fundamental perspective on livelihood and the sacredness of daily activities.

What will you take home from our experience at dathun? The heart of dathun is mindfulness practice, which in Sanskrit is shamatha, which literally means “peaceful abiding.” Mindfulness involves training the mind to come back to the present moment and to abandon the struggle involved in clinging to the past or worrying about the future. Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche described this as “turning the mind into an ally.” The ability to place one’s attention on any task or object without struggle is useful in throughout one’s life. More importantly, developing a sense of sympathy and appreciation towards ourselves and the world is the basis of a good human life.

“The big snow”

is the meaning of the greenlandic name “Apussuit” a skiing center at the top of a glacier 25 km from the greenlandic town Maniitsoq in Greenland. (Maniitsoq means The Uneven, because the area is one of the most inaccessibles in Vest Greenland.

The area is during summertime approx. 250 km², but substantial larger in the wintertime. Its extremely suitable for skiing. If you are going to reach the ski resort, you first arrive by boat to Apussuit habour, and hereafter walk to the ski terrain or get help by one of the vehicles/snowmobiles.

The terrain varies from 150 meters to 1.200 meters above the sea level. The center at the top have space for 14 guest´, while closer to the sea level along the mountainside there is extra 5 cabins with space for 20 people.

Besides the skiing activities  you can have a trip at a snowmobile in the stunning totally white landscape..snow desert..

Many many years ago, me and my former boyfriend made skiing trips to Apussuit with our seaplane…. The little plane had exactly 14 passengersseats…less passengers for these trips because the guest´had so much skiing equipment with them..

When they took off they were so exited, huge smiles and laughter, and when we picked them up a week later they were sooo happy, tanned and tired…because they had been skiing all day and night long (it was in the spring and summer, so they had midnight sun)…

I need to find and upload an old photo from those days…

The center have been closed for some years, but now it starts up again, and a lot of local people really look forward to pay it a visit again…and I think tourist’ should give themselves a lifetime skiing experience and visit Apussuit…its breathtaking..have a look at the nice photos…

fairy magic and sacred spaces

from irish garden designer Mary Reynolds which have written several books about the subject of inviting the wild nature in to our lives and a sweet movie have been made about her life…. She has her roots in natural gardening theory, and seeks to create spaces that are healing, truthful and magical.

That have made me wonder about my own place on earth (which I find the most beautiful). I live in a natural magical surrounding and nature…so I don’ t have any ambition about re-arranging or redesigning my environment, but I I would love to transform the magical energy or absorb it into something beneficial…it sounds so effective, but I really think that if any of You could feel the energy of this huge amazing nature of Greenland, you would understand why it gives me and others such an awe feeling…filled with gratitude…you connect immediately with nature, probably because its there pushing you in your mind, body and space..

What Mary Reynolds encourages us to do is to form our own relationship with the little piece of earth we are lucky enough to call our own gardens. I have a huge garden both in front of my house and in the back…wild wild nature…

I have bought some of her books, and they are still waiting to be read…

The Garden Awakening – Designs to Nurture Our Land and Ourselves
Mary is also developing her years of listening to the land into a comprehensive book. Her new approach to garden design is a practical treasure map that leads gardeners into a gentle and healing relationship with the land. This book is a step by step instruction manual drawing on ancient methods of working with the land and using them to invite the power and energy of nature back into your life and surround your house and life in its life giving healing embrace.

Everything becomes simple if you immerse yourself in nature. Life’s complications melt away, leaving only the truth of the present moment, and the presence of what I call God. In this place we can see our soul reflected in every living thing, every gust of wind and splash of rain, and here we can find peace. This is our true home. Yet we are losing what little wild places we have left in nature, those corners where the spirits of the earth are flowing freely, where harmony, and balance still exists and we feel accepted for the truth of who we are. We have gone off course and need to find our way again. An old pathway, overgrown and forgotten, is waiting impatiently to lead us back home. Nature is willing us on.

This is a little introduction and trailer about Mary Reynolds and the movie made about her and her life..

Playing at work

I have a well-being project at work where we will use this method, Lego Serious Play…which I think is going to push all of us in a good direction.

The very talented and lovely Inga Coello from Coello will facilitate the workshop. So I’m the lucky person playing at work a kind of “kidulting”.

Why do we care about play? Did you know that more than just about any other activity, play is what promotes the healthy development of your child! The most important thing to remember about play is that it should be pleasurable. That means that if your child is having fun, then you are doing it right! So why not use that at the office…its more than playing, its about storytelling, and helping the unknown to the surface…

and another one

One knit became three

I fell in love with these knits and they became my new projects…from the lovely danish knitdesigner Mette from Petite Knit…I have some lovely dark grey alpaca yarn, which is for the sweater, the off white blouse will be knitted in some wool/silk yarn, and the hat isn’t decided yet…but I would love to make it in a warm colour…My hands get restless if they don’t have a knitproject…
